Autistic artist brings space ship gig to Café OTO
Robyn Steward (35) from Wandsworth is a space trumpet player who believes in bringing music to everyone, presenting inclusive conscious events that aim to be welcoming and friendly to all.
Robyn hosts Robyn’s Rocket at legendary Hackney venue Café OTO. Experimental music scenes are often full of white middle aged men, but Robyn opens up the doors to everyone, including people from her community of artists and musicians in the learning disability art scene in London. Robyn works with and is supported by pioneering arts organisation Heart N Soul who believe in the power and talents of people with autism and Learning Disabilities.
Heart N Soul started a UK wide movement of club nights for and by people with learning disabilities, including Club Soda in Croydon. Now Club Soda artists The Carbonators bring their unique sound first developed for a gig with Can's Damo Suzuki in 2011 to Robyn's Rocket.
Joining The Carbonators are Manchester based Prangers, made up of Joe Tatton, Maryanne Royle and Dan Watkins, who offer up northern infused noise with home-made instruments and deep reverberating rhythms.
Headlining the event will be a special performance, seeing Robyn Steward (trumpet) join double bassist John Edwards for a first time duo set. John has been a figure in the international jazz scene since the 80s, and has played with all the great UK jazz musicians like Evan Parker, Lol Coxhill and Steve Noble, as well as international heavy hitters like Mulatu Astatke, Roscoe Mitchell, Peter Brotzmannn and countless others.
The gig will be at 8pm June 2nd (a bank holiday) at Café OTO, and streamed for free via the Cafe OTO website.
